One of the Balearic Islands, found in the Mediterranean Sea, Majorca is the largest and second most populated Spanish island. The beautiful beaches combined with the booming night life on the south of the island means it brings in a huge amount of tourism, especially from the UK, Germany and Ireland. Unsurprisingly, then, many famous figures have lived on Majorca.
There have been, and still are, many big names on the island of Majorca, and this article mentions but a few of them. There were many notable figures on the island in the 19th century. Antonio Maura Montaner, the twice Prime Minister of Spain, is one, and the military commander Joaquin Jovellar y Soler is another. The philosopher/writer Ramon Llull is one such academic, while Chopin brought his world renowned talent to the island for a short while too, not to mention the surrealist painter Joan Mir. Clearly the 19th and 20th centuries saw many of its creative figures working on Majorca.
Modern celebrities have also been known to reside on the island. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones bought a house there in the 90s and they live in it for half the year, apparently. Others include the model/actress Claudia Schiffer, the former wife of John Lennon Cynthia Charles, and Annie Lennox, most famous for her work with the Eurhythmics.
Jorg Martinez, winner of the 2006 world 250cc motor cycling title, the tennis player Boris Becker, the former England footballer Steve McManaman and the infamous F1 racer Michael Schumacher are more people, famous in the world of sports, who have or do live on the island. Majorca has been home to a huge amount of famous people, whether they were actually raised there or moved there later, and as such it is an important place, socially and historically.
